Now a classic dancehall voice, Cocoa Tea recorded his first single in '74 but didn't gain worldwide fame until the late '80s. The singer named himself for his favorite hot beverage. He was born Calvin George Scott in 1959. When his first single didn't take off, Cocoa Tea took a break from performing, working as a racehorse jockey and a fisherman. Tea did some of his best work for King Jammy, recording with Shabba Ranks and the singer Home T. Unlike many singers, Cocoa Tea didn't face the ghettos of Kingston as a kid: he grew up in a fishing village.
