Byrne, Smith & Others Work With Sakamoto

David Byrne, Patti Smith and DJ Spooky are just a few of the artists who are featured on Discord, a full-length symphonic piece by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.| The work is slated for release by Sony Classical on Dec. 10.

The artists appear on the fourth movement ("Salvation") of "untitled 01", the four-part composition that comprises Discord. In the form of spoken word, these artists, and others, will answer the symbolic question posed by Sakamoto: "What does salvation mean to you?"

Laurie Anderson, David Torn, David Syvian and Japan's leading literary critic, Koujin Karantani will also be featured. Chinese pop star Cui Jian, director Bernardo Bertolucci, writer Banana Yoshimoto and her father, philosopher Takaaki Yoshimoto, all answer the question as well. Further, DJ Spooky appears throughout the album, mixing in his electronic sampling with the symphony's orchestral movements.

All proceeds from the project will go to benefit War Child, Brian Eno's organization that helps children who are victims of war all over the world.

In related news, a remix of the movement titled "Anger," featuring Talvin Sing, is tentatively scheduled for release on Jan. 26 on Ninja Tunes. (Lana Fanelli)
