A charismatic and sometimes raunchy R&B frontman, Ballard had an upbeat, rambunctious gospel singing style.
Ballard first fronted the Royals. They changed their name to the Midnighters to avoid being confused with the Five Royales.
Though he originally recorded "The Twist," Ballard was largely overlooked when Chubby Checker took the song to Number One.
