An influential singer-songwriter/guitarist from New York, Patti Smith's wide-ranging style touched on folk, rock, and punk. Smith came up in the fertile mid-1970s New York punk scene amidst the Ramones, Television, and Blondie. Smith's debut album, "Horses," drew huge critical response and some mockery from drag queens. It's an undeniable classic. As the '70s wore on, Smith's appeal grew. She co-wrote her best-known single "Because the Night" with the Boss. Smith was an artist and poet before turning to rock 'n' roll. French Symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud was her main inspiration.
