Along with NOFX and Bad Religion, Pennywise have become a staple of the Southern California Skate Punk scene. Pennywise is named after the sadistic clown from Stephen King's horror classic "It." Soon after taking a break from the band due to alcoholism, founding bassist Jason Thirsk committed suicide on July 29, 1996. The four original members of Pennywise were high school classmates in Hermosa Beach, California. Pennywise tracks are featured in several video games including "Burnout 3," "Tony Hawk Pro Skater" and "EA Sports NHL 06."
