With a smooth baritone voice and a slick traditional sound, he has stayed on top of the country charts since his debut album. As a struggling musician, Lawrence once worked in phone sales and as an ironworker. In 1991, Lawrence was shot four times during an armed robbery outside his girlfriend's hotel room. After Lawrence was shot, his 1991 debut "Sticks and Stones" and its title track went to No. 1 on the country charts. His 2000 release, "Lessons Learned," was his account of rebuilding his life after various convictions and a divorce.
